An Arduino and a thermistor gets you a fuzzy logic controller, then you can have it turn the knob or patch it right in if you're brave. IMO best solution is to reroute the existing knob to your controller. If that's more work / research than you're willing to attempt, it will get expensive. In most modern cars, yes.
