Nov 15, 2018 · Hatchback versions of the car don't have an unlock function for the hatch. The hatch is simply always locked. It is unlocked and opened in the single activity of pressing the rectangular button in back. Yesterday, out of the blue, the lift gate stopped unlocking/opening. I can release it manually from the inside but nothing I do with the remote or door switch will unlock the lift gate. Online search turns up other instances and all say just go to dealer for a repair. I work at a mazda dealer. Open the tailgate manually and leave it open, take both the cables OFF the battery and hold them together (when the cables are OFF the battery) re install the cables on battery and wait a minute.
